Mediterranean or Atlantic road?

Removals from Hayes to Spain are two corridors that share a starting point. Loads for Barcelona, Valencia and the Costa Blanca usually cross France to the Mediterranean and enter Catalonia at La Jonquera. Loads for Madrid, Andalucía and the Costa del Sol often take the Atlantic side of France and cross at Irun into the Basque Country. Is there a customs stop at the Pyrenees?

On a move from Hayes to Spain, customs happens at the start and at the end, never at the Pyrenees. NIE, TIE, padrón: which comes first?

For most UK households, moving from Hayes to Spain involves five documents. The NIE, your foreigner identity number, comes first; the Spanish consulate in London can issue it before you leave. If you are going to live there, you also need a national visa from the consulate, such as the non-lucrative visa for people living on savings or a pension. After arrival you request the TIE, the residence card that carries your NIE, at a police foreigners' office. Then you register on the padrón at your ayuntamiento, which opens the door to healthcare and local services. NIE · Número de Identidad de Extranjero
Your foreigner identity number, needed for property, utilities, banking and tax. Request it through the Spanish consulate in London before you leave, or in Spain through a police foreigners' office.
National visa · Visado nacional

TIE · Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero
The physical residence card, requested in Spain after arrival at a fingerprint appointment. It carries your NIE.

Registration on the municipal register at your ayuntamiento. Needed for healthcare, schools and many local services, so it is worth doing soon after you move in.
Transfer-of-residence relief · Franquicia por traslado de residencia

Spain, answered: what people ask before booking

Do I need an NIE before my belongings arrive in Spain?

In practice, yes. The NIE is needed to buy or rent, to connect utilities and to open a bank account, and Spanish customs may ask for it with your relief claim. You can request one through the Spanish consulate in London before you leave, which takes a job off your arrival list.

Can you deliver to Mallorca, Menorca or Ibiza?

Yes. Island moves take a ferry from Barcelona, Valencia or Dénia once the load has crossed the mainland. The Balearics are inside the EU customs area, so there is no second clearance on arrival; the extra steps are the ferry booking and, often, a smaller island vehicle. Both are planned at survey and included in the written quote.

Do you use the ferry to Santander or Bilbao?

For some moves, yes. A ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth to northern Spain cuts out most of the drive through France and can suit addresses in the north and centre. For the Mediterranean coast, the road through France is usually more direct. We choose per job and explain it in the quote.

What is the padrón and why does it matter?

The padrón is the municipal register kept by your ayuntamiento. Registering, known as empadronarse, gets you onto local healthcare and school lists and is asked for by many local offices. Bring your passport and proof of address, such as a lease or deeds. It is your visit to make; we just make sure the furniture is in first.

Can you deliver to an apartment with comunidad moving rules?

Yes, it is routine on the Costas. Many comunidades de propietarios restrict moving to certain hours, require lift protection or need notice given to the administrador. Our Spanish partner team arranges this before delivery, and we note any restrictions you already know about at survey.
